Spatial Analysis for Sustainable Development
-
The Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) Study for the City of Doral, FL, was an educational project developed to teach spatial analysis and sustainable development at The Earth Institute of Columbia University in the City of New York. During this advanced level course, students completed a series of labs to produce and maintain the City of Doral UTC dataset pack which included raster and vector point dataset. The TIFF and shape formatted files were originally created during the Fall 2014 semester and updated thereafter for several semesters by different cohorts of students until Spring 2018.

Using the vector data and other information produced during the semester, participants also learned how to develop density raster surface layers to model UTC distribution and its potential impacts throughout the city.

A mobile geoApp was also developed using ArcGIS Online (AGOL) and hosted at https://giscience.maps.arcgis.com a geoportal created with funding from a grant from The Earth Institute of Columbia University. The App allows users to swipe left and right to load a translucid layer of rasterized density data calculated from the UTC point vector datasets.
