GIS for Neighborhood Planning and Redevelopment

  • The New Community Corporation - NCC- Neighborhood Study was a local development research project I conducted in Newark, NJ, while working as a Research Assistant with the Rutgers Community Outreach Partnership Center –RCOPC at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers The State University of New Jersey.

  • The research involved reviewing local planning studies, as well as collecting and analyzing census and other local data, to produce maps and information of the study areas under consideration for redevelopment.

  • The series of selected study areas were once successful neighborhoods that had been badly damaged during the 1960's social uprising in Newark, NJ.

  • A windshield survey revealed that many of the abandoned and damaged structures had become places for squatting and drug activities.  Data collected during these activities were incorporated into a database to create information useful to prepare working maps and to conduct other neighborhood studies at NCC.

  • I combined this project with my Newark Science High School consultancy.  We hosted an event at NCC with the GIS students from the Newark High School of Science to demonstrate some of the mapping projects and other GIS activities taking place at NCC in support of local community planning.
