Manual Cartography and Master Plan Map Production

The following images show some examples of my early planning and cartographic work.  They serve to illustrate different techniques that were employed during the map production process.  These examples include hand-draw maps, use of color tints in dark room image photo production, and other activities conducted in support of Master Plan production.

Before the growth and expansion of GIS, maps were produced manually which required the completion of a number of interrelated and sequential steps.  Some of the tasks and activities I conducted for many urban and environmental planning projects included windshield surveys; base map drafting; acetone overlay analyses; and final map production, reproduction and printing.

The examples below illustrate some of the analog products that used to be produced during the different phases of the map production for the planning process.

Manual Cartography: These examples illustrate the preparation and use of tint screens and color tints, which were produced in a darkroom environment after photographing the original hand-drawn map.
