Columbia University - SDEVW3450 - Spatial Analysis for Sustainable Development

  • "Thank you for a great semester!"

  • "I took this class, because GIS was always something that intimidated me. While, I don't think I will be attempting a career in GIS, I truly enjoyed this course, and was glad that I was able to gain concrete skills. Again, thank you for a wonderful semester!"

  • "I believe all of my labs are submitted and accounted for with the submission of this one. Thank you for all your help this semester! I feel as though this is one of the classes I learned the most from at Columbia as someone who typically gravitates towards more qualitative analytical courses. I plan to keep in touch! Have a great summer!"

  • "Thank you so much for such a great semester! You created an open space for questions and learning, you facilitated our creative process in generating these final project case studies and research topics. I hope you have a great summer, thank you!"

  • "Dear Professor, thank you for a great semester.  I now know how to develop a large GIS project for work and for my other classes."

  • "This is the best class that I ever have in this college. the lecture is very excellent, too. the exam is very focused and valid to the class."

Hunter College CUNY - GTECH 710 - Introduction to GIS (grad)

  • "I love the class and more important he was straightforward with the concept of working for the grade. The class is not made by the professor but what the student puts the effort for it. It may have been very confusing at times but once you realize the concept and the lab, it was easier to understand. I which this class would not be as dense in order to process all the concepts in a "slower" time instead of being rushed week after week. I think Prof. has a very extensive knowledge of GIS that sometimes may not be reflected when instructing the students but I hope he continues teaching in the future. Thank you Professor!"

  • "Very good introduction course."

  • "Doing the lab in class helped a lot. I know the professor is very busy, however he is at times late on returning labs, which contains constructive criticism. Without seeing the constructive criticism from the previous labs, it is at time possible to repeat the same mistakes which is not our intentions."

  • "Perhaps you should put the review questions in the lab exercise so we know which map or the question you are referring to or you should be more specific about your question, so students know what you’re asking. Also, for the open written response questions in the midterm, I felt your questions are too vague, please be more specific on what you’re looking for."

  • "The professor was a very respectful and accommodating instructor who always tried to give his students the proper attention despite the size of the class. His skills at GIS are beyond question, and his lectures were very informative. My only gripe was that perhaps the class might have benefited from the inclusion of a student aid to help make the work a little easier, particularly for people like me who had no real exposure to the software before and might need a little extra time adjusting to the nuts and bolts of GIS."

  • "This course was an a comprehensive introduction to a complicated, highly technical program. While I was not too lost and feel I have a basic understanding, I think it would have helped me personally if I had taken an intro to basic cartography course first."

  • "The concepts and operations in the program are very abstract and the professor did help us by explaining purpose and real life applications and providing visual explanations, and the labs were also a great way to learn by doing. On the other hand, some things that made it a more challenging learning experience for me were the class size, which made it harder to get individual attention, and the classroom size itself, which impeded my ability to hear the professor at times."

  • "I also thought at first that having combined levels (undergrad, grad and PHD) of students and students of different fields (geography, urban planning, etc.) would be a problem, because I figured that some students would come in having an advantage over other students, but during the final projects section it was clear that this was not so much of an issue."

  • "I felt that the professor's critiques could have been slightly more objective at times, and that he should not have initially told us not to come to his office hours for the final project, but overall, his feedback was very helpful, the course materials thorough, and he showed a great concern for his students' quality of work and future careers."

  • "He was also helpful and responsive to emailed questions most of the time."

  • "It was one of the best classes that I ever had. If we compared what I knew about GIS before and what I learnt in his class, I learn a lot. He knows how to teach, and the material he hands out is excellent. I am grateful having him as a professor. Besides that, he is very helpful."

  • "Thank you for this instructive course. The most helpful parts were when you veered away from the PowerPoint presentations and illustrated the concepts with your own examples. Also, I really appreciated that you were so open and available to help us on a one-on-one basis. Have a wonderful summer."

  • "He is a good teacher, but I think the class would be better with a limited number of students. However I think he did a good job and certainly increased my interest in GIS."
